Supreme court chief justice John Roberts stayed a federal district court injunction that had barred construction while a lawsuit challenging the project proceeds, CNBC said.

The order is an administrative stay and could be lifted by the full Supreme Court, the report said.

Trump welcomed the decision, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the court's action, CNBC said.
